Baselworld Jewellery 2009
BASELWORLD, the World Watch and Jewellery Show, displayed varied and versatile new developments, creations and innovations in terms of jewellery trends for 2009. From March 26 to April 2, 2009, this rendezvous for the world’s leading brands clearly demonstrated that even in times of slowdown and recession, there were some stunning jewels that could hold the beholder in raptures and compel them to desire and possess. In 2009, the classics made a comeback in personalised pieces of jewellery, which could become something sensual, be touched, felt and conquered. Each brand’s booth displayed maximum opulence through innovation.
Jewellery designers responded to the times with some creative looks like polished selections of rough stone cuts, highly technical settings masked by beautiful stone mosaics, flexible gold jewelry to accommodate an extra pound or two on frames, and more. In the jewellery segment, one noticed boundless creativity. And the bigger the finished pieces of jewellery are, the greater the need for big pearls and stones. A major trend was coloured pearls, including ones in shades of gold and brown. The red spinel emerged as the most preferred stone as did the mandarin garnet with a classic cut. Engraving on precious stones is also gaining importance, while cameos and engraved banded agate in signet rings are making a comeback.
In 2009, jewellery (and even watches) is being set with an abundance of precious stones, while boasting highly decorative elements, sculptural forms and surprising materials. Ornamental decors reminiscent of art nouveau and art deco are the rage for 2009. Sober, minimalist styles are also in vogue.
